The confidence map is used to locally adapt the strength of the filter. The advantage over non-adaptive methods is that fine structures are better preserved as unnecessary blurring is avoided. See an example here: http://people.inf.ethz.ch/mafrank/3D_denoising/3D_image_denoising.htm </p> <p>This works very well for images from 3D TOF cameras with the squared signal amplitude as a confidence measure. The filter was developed especially for such TOF cameras as manufactured by PMD or SwissRanger. </p> <p>The method is described in our OE paper </p> <p>"Denoising of continuous-wave time-of-flight depth images using confidence measures".
